The African Society for Laboratory Medicine (ASLM) is a pan-African professional body working to advocate for the critical role and needs of laboratory medicine and networks throughout Africa. Africa is rapidly growing but faces major health challenges including epidemics of HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria, and new priorities such as Ebola and other global health security threats. Strengthened laboratory capacity and surveillance in Africa are critical to overcoming the burden of disease and ensuring a healthy future for the continent. ASLM addresses these challenges by working collaboratively with governments, local and international organizations, implementing partners, and the private sector.

Position Description:

Reporting to the CEO, the Director of Science and New Initiatives responsibilities include but not limited to defining clear scientific policy needs, establishing clear technical and scientific roadmap as well as developing plans for research and new initiatives.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead the department in establishing short and long-term goals, objectives, and plans for research and new initiatives.
  • Collate and develop evidence to support ASLM’s 2020 goals and associated investment
  • Establish a clear technical and scientific roadmap to support the advancement of laboratory medicine in the continent. Define a clear technical agenda and mobilize partners and stakeholders around this agenda.
  • Help define a clear scientific policy needs and the science required for effective policy in healthcare supported by diagnostic medicine.
  • Provide cross-project leadership for action plans to meet objectives and timelines.
  • Establish innovative partnerships and networks with centers of excellence, research facilities and other technical experts, public health institutes and international technical experts within the continent as well as internationally to create greater collaboration and innovative programs and research.
  • Support the strengthening and expansion of the African Public Health Laboratory Network
  • Assist with strengthening diagnosis evidence to support regulatory strengthening and harmonization in Africa.
  • Oversee monitoring and evaluation of ASLM’s program outputs, outcomes and impact linked to the organizations’ strategic plan
  • Prepare funding applications/bids.
  • Support with managing the African Journal of Laboratory Medicine.
  • Coordinate and implement activities form ASLM programmatic work; drive continuous improvements and ensure consistent practices.
  • Provide leadership and expert advice for research programs that are both national and international in scope.
  • Identify and leverage new opportunities with innovative diagnostics and new scientific discoveries that would advance healthcare in Africa.
  • Perform market research, competitive analysis and existing customer outreach to evaluate current offerings and identify gaps
  • Identify and prepare business case(s) and business plans for new initiatives
  • Work with existing technology teams and/or outsourced resources to bring new offerings to market
  • Apply his/her own business judgment to balance project quality, resources, and time to successfully deliver projects
  • Work directly with the CEO  and other Directors for special projects


  • Ph.D. degree in biomedical sciences and/or MD
  • A minimum of 5 years of research or related experience.
  • Strong background in science (medicine, pathology, epidemiology, laboratory medicine, research) and application of science in public health
  • Proven experience-conducting research.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and in teams.
  • Experience managing multi partner/cross country programs in developing countries.
  • Previous inspection experience with regulatory authorities is beneficial.

Skills and Specifications:

  • Passion for science education and drive to work as part of a dynamic, fast paced, highly motivated team.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. Experience writing/editing articles (must know how a scientific journal works).
  • Persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills.
  • Strong analytical problem solving skills.
  • Self-starter with a strong ability to think and work independently while handling multiple projects and priorities. At the same time, ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people.
  • Strong quantitative skills (Biostatistics/Biometry)
  • Passion, idealism, integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven, and ability to be self-directed.

Salary – According to the company’s scale
