ASLM background

The African Society for Laboratory Medicine (ASLM) is a pan-African professional body working to advocate for the critical role and needs of laboratory medicine and networks throughout Africa. Africa is rapidly growing but faces major health challenges including epidemics of HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria, and new priorities such as Ebola and other global health security threats. Strengthened laboratory capacity and surveillance in Africa are critical to overcoming the burden of disease and ensuring a healthy future for the continent. ASLM addresses these challenges by working collaboratively with governments, local and international organizations, implementing partners, and the private sector.

Summary of the position:

The Project Assistant will provide support to the management and administration of projects addressing HIV viral load testing and funded by the Bill Melinda Gates Foundation and Unitaid. The project assistant will support the Program Managers in administration, financial and secretarial activities related to the Laboratory community of practice the Point of care project and unitaid project She/He will support project managers in overseeing and coordinating partners’ work, reporting of activities and implementation of field work. In collaboration with the team of ASLM project assistants, she/he will also assist with general support activities such as travel arrangement, organization of events, office management and maintenance of ASLM databases. She/he will be reporting to Director of Programs.


The Project Assistant will :

  • Support ASLM team in the selection, contracting and management of vendors
  • Support ASLM team in financial management and reporting of their respective projects
  • Assist the finance team in ensuring that project financial and administrative management follows ASLM’s rules and procedures
  • Assist ASLM in organizing travel in support of programmatic activities
  • Assist or coordinate all aspects of event planning and organization

Perform other related tasks as identified by the Director of Programs


The candidate will need to exhibit the following skills and experience:

  • First degree in business administration or secretarial science or other related fields
  • She/he has solid experience in office management. Experience in supporting international projects is desirable.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office required
  • Effective written and oral communication skills in the English language
  • Strong time management skills
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented
