ASLM background

The African Society for Laboratory Medicine (ASLM) is a pan-African professional body working to advocate for the critical role and needs of laboratory medicine and networks throughout Africa. Africa is rapidly growing but faces major health challenges including epidemics of HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria, and new priorities such as Ebola and other global health security threats. Strengthened laboratory capacity and surveillance in Africa are critical to overcoming the burden of disease and ensuring a healthy future for the continent. ASLM addresses these challenges by working collaboratively with governments, local and international organizations, implementing partners, and the private sector.

Summary of the position:

The Web developer will manage all of ASLM’s technology needs related to the smooth operation of programs including oversight role of the Laboratory Information System project and website developments. Under general supervision of the Director of Science and New Initiatives and Communications Manager, and the direct supervision of the IT/Web Specialist, the Web Developer provides website development, maintenance and oversight for individual departments or programs. The Web Developer assists in conceptualization and implementation of design elements and determines that ASLM-sponsored websites meet usability requirements, ensures compatibility with various platforms, and monitors the ease of navigation. The Developer assists in assimilation of new software programs by training and serving as a resource for designated staff.

Key Responsibilities:

  • In collaboration with ASLM staff and consultants, contribute to the re-design, update, management, and maintenance of the ASLM website and various project websites
    • Define web page design criteria; ensures design is consistent with existing or established standards
    • Develop designs, produce and code new web pages for individual departments and/or programs especially in PHP, MYSQL, JavaScript, CSS, AJAX with MVC development architecture
    • Create website layout/user interface by using WordPress
    • Maintain mapping databases
    • Maintain, expand, and scale ASLM’s website
    • Monitor website, compiling monthly reports of website analytics and traffic, and preparing quarterly reports with analysis
    • Manage WordPress core theme and plugin updates
    • Stay update on recent trends in the WordPress Community
    • Utilize Google Analytics to generate and interpret reports to link web traffic to outreach efforts
  • Under collaboration with the IT team, assist in the procurement, installation and maintenance of IT hardware and software
  • Address IT related questions from internal or external users
  • Integrate data from various back-end services and databases
  • Create and maintain software documentation
  • Maintain ASLM’s expert database

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor degree in Computer Science/ Information Systems Management, and 3-5 years of work experience in Laboratory Information Systems web-based-tools development, support, and management is required.
  • Deep expertise and hands on experience with Web Applications and programming languages such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, JQuery and API’s
  • Detail knowledge of content management software, focusing on the WordPress platform
  • Adequate knowledge of best software development practices, relational database systems, Object Oriented Programming, web application development, and Search Engine Optimization process
  • Maintaining updated knowledge on emerging technologies/industry trends and apply them into operations and activities.
  • Good level English (speaking and writing) is required. French is a plus.
  • Basic graphic design, and Experience and knowledge on google map experience are a plus.
  • Strong ability to think and work independently while handling multiple projects and priorities. At the same time, ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people
