Dr. Ali Elbireer

Dr. Elbireer has been the Chief Executive Officer of ASLM since November 2016. Before that he was a faculty member of Johns Hopkins University (JHU) School of Medicine, Baltimore-USA and has worked in East Africa for over decade as the Country Director for JHU-NGO in Uganda. He holds a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) and a Doctoral degree (PhD) in Healthcare Administration. He brings a strong history of leadership, having held positions in several healthcare establishments, including medical laboratories, research facilities, centers of excellence, and hospitals in the United States and Africa.

Furthermore, Dr. Elbireer was the Laboratory Administrative Director for Makerere University-JHU at the Infectious Diseases Institute (MU-JHU/IDI) in Kampala, Uganda. The MU-JHU/IDI Core Laboratory was the first College of American Pathologist (CAP)-accredited medical laboratory in East Africa in 2003.

Under Dr. Elbireer’s leadership the MU-JHU/IDI Core Laboratory was selected in 2008 and 2010 by the “Medical Laboratory Observer” Magazine as Laboratory of the Year (second & first runner-up respectively). This was the first international laboratory to be selected for this honor. In December 2012, his laboratory was also selected by ASLM as one of the “Best Practice Laboratories in Africa”.

Finally, Dr. Elbireer is a dedicated advocate for laboratory systems strengthening. He was the Chairman of the American Society for Clinical Pathologist (ASCP) Advisory Board of Certification in Uganda.

He has published several manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals on clinical laboratory science and the quality of laboratory services in Sub-Saharan Africa. Contact him via Email

Mah-Sere

Mah-Sere Keita
Director of Global Health Security

Ms. Keita is a native of Mali but multi-cultural having been born in Spain and lived on three different continents by the age of 10. She feels communication is the key to resolving all issues and thus speaks and understands 5 languages and hopes to learn more. She comes to ASLM with 15 years of international programme management in public health. She has held leadership positions at the Catholic Relief Services, American Society for Microbiology, and Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health; and she holds a Master’s in Public Health (MPH) with a focus on infectious disease epidemiology from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Her proudest accomplishments are being the mother of two wonderful boys and helping the world’s most vulnerable.

Talkmore Maruta
Senior Programme Specialist

Mr. Maruta has implemented international health programmes for the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) and the Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics (FIND). He holds a bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory sciences from the University Of Zimbabwe, School Of Health Sciences, and a master’s degree in public health from the University of Limpopo, South Africa. Teferi

Teferi Mekonen
Senior Programme Specialist

Mr. Mekonen previously served as the Laboratory Project Coordinator for the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-Ethiopia and as the Laboratory Strengthening Program Director for International Clinical Laboratories. He has a bachelor’s degree in biology from Asmara University, Eritrea, a master’s degree in microbiology from Addis Ababa University, and a master’s degree in public health from Mekelle University, Ethiopia. Contact him via Email.

 

Ndlovu

Nqobile Ndlovu
Senior Programme Specialist

Before joining ASLM, Mr. Ndlovu served as the Laboratory Project Coordinator for the African Field Epidemiology Network (AFENET) in Kampala, Uganda, where he implemented laboratory programmes. He also served as Assistant Field Coordinator for the Master in Public Health training programme at the University of Zimbabwe. Mr. Ndlovu holds a bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory sciences and a master’s degree in public health from the University Of Zimbabwe. Contact him via Email.

Ruth Girma
Programme Coordinator

Ms. Girma previously served as a Programme Officer for John Snow Inc., a USAID Deliver Project in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, as well as a conference organiser for Courtesy Associates and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa. She has a degree in Business Administration and Information Systems from Addis Ababa University, and a Diplôme d’Université en Management and Licence en Administration des Entreprises from the Université de Poitiers, France. Contact her via Email.
